Dr John Bruce Memorial/Semefab STEM Awards 2020

The Dr John Bruce Memorial Awards for 6th Year Excellence in STEM Subjects and The Semefab Awards for 4th Year Excellence in STEM Subjects

Semefab along with Fife Council development and the three local high schools in Glenrothes launched in 2020 an exciting new initiative to celebrate and award students who have excelled in 4th and 6th year STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects. These awards will be an annual ongoing event to encourage young adults into the engineering environment.

The Dr John Bruce Memorial Award is awarded for 6th year students who have excelled across the board in STEM subjects. This award is very close to the Semefab’s family heart as it celebrates our highly respected departed joint founding director Dr John Bruce who is very much missed within the company. The award for first place was £500 and second place £350 along with awards and trophy.

The Semefab Award is for 4th year students who have excelled across the board in STEM subjects. This award signifies Semefab’s ongoing commitment to encourage and support Glenrothes schools and students at 4th year level. The award for first place was £250 and second place £150 along with awards and trophy.

Glenrothes, Glenwood and Auchmuty High Schools have been very responsive to these awards and although it has been a difficult year due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown the awards were eventually received by the students. Semefab looks forward to working and supporting this important initiative in the future.

 

AWARD WINNERS

AUCHMUTY HIGH SCHOOL

S6 Winner – Rhiannon Shaw
Rhiannon achieved 2 A passes in Advanced Higher Maths and Computing Science, as well as achieving 5 A passes at Higher last year – 3 in STEM subjects. Rhiannon is a keen programmer and is now studying Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science at Edinburgh University. Rhiannon hopes to use her award to fund her driving tuition as she is commuting from home to Edinburgh each day for her studies.

S6 Runner up – Sophie Mearns 
Sophie achieved 9 Highers including 5 in STEM subjects (4 at A and a one year course in Chemistry at B). Sophie is now studying Marine and Freshwater Biology at Glasgow University and is keen to pursue a career in marine biology thereafter. Sophie’s younger brother Euan was proud to accept the award on his sister’s behalf.

S4 Winner – Hana Saeed
Hana achieved 7 National 5s at grade A – all at band 1 – 6 of which were STEM subjects. Hana is now studying for Highers in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as English. Hana’s goal is to go on to study Medicine at university perhaps specializing in a hospital setting. Hana is a participant in the St Andrews University/Fife College/Russell Trust First Chances programme. In her spare time Hana enjoys Ju Jitsu and trampolining.

S4 Runner up – Sara Saeed
Sara achieved an identical set of results as her sister Hana (straight band 1s in 7 National 5s) but with 1 less in a STEM subject – hence second place! Sara is now studying for Highers in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as English. Sara’s goal is to go on to study dentistry at university and ultimately have her own practice. Sara is a participant in the St Andrews University/Fife College/Russell Trust First Chances programme. In her spare time Sara enjoys Ju Jitsu and trampolining.

GLENROTHES HIGH SCHOOL

S6 Winner – Laura Clark
Laura achieved 5 National 5s at grade A; 8 Highers at grade A and 2 Advanced Highers also at grade A. Laura has started her first year at Dundee University where she is studying Nursing.

S6 Runner up – Caileigh Yule
Caileigh achieved 6 National 5s at grade A; 7 Highers at A and 2 Advanced Highers also at grade A. Caileigh is on a gap year and is hoping to study veterinary medicine next year.

S4 Winner – Jaden Lenny
Jaden achieved 7 National 5s at grade A. Jaden is thinking about engineering or dentistry as possible future careers.

S4 Runner up – Carmen Feeney
Carmen also achieved 7 National 5s at grade A. Carmen is considering physiotherapy as a possible future career.

GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL 

S6 Winner – Scott Gaffney
Scott has shown his commitment to STEM subjects through his strong work ethic and success of his independently-led Advanced Higher Physics project researching polarization. In his final year at Glenwood, Scott achieved A grades in Advanced Higher Physics, Advanced Higher Maths, Higher Music and Higher German. Scott has taken his love for physics further to study Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Strathclyde.  

S6 Runner up – Logan Crawford
Throughout S6 Logan aimed to seek further opportunities to share his love of science with younger year groups. Logan participated in the St Andrews Space School during third year and has since aimed to encourage pupils at all stages to follow in his footsteps. Logan’s commitment to STEM subjects was shown through his achievements of an A in Advanced Higher Physics and C in Advanced Higher Maths. Logan also achieved an A in Higher German and B in Advanced Higher Music. Logan is now studying Physics and Maths at the University of St Andrews.

S4 Winner – Josh Fraser
Josh has shown an exceptional commitment to STEM subjects from the beginning of S4. Josh was the only pupil in school to select all 3 sciences at National 5 level.

S4 Runner up – Harris MacDonald
Harris has shown a great work ethic towards his STEM studies, often researching concepts outside of school to gain a wider understanding of his subjects. Harris always aims to challenge his understanding and has shown an aptitude for problem solving in his science studies. Harris achieved A grades in Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English, German and History.
